Application of a Bio-Safe® Skin Shield™ lotion to hands and forearms, twice a shift, is effective against a range of gram positive and gram negative bacteria. The regular use, according to instructions, can reduce the incidence of cross contamination.
Properly applied, Bio-Safe® Skin Shield™ lotion forms an inert, long-lasting polymer coating on the surface of the skin. This polymer forms an inert, hydrophobic non-ionic coating that chemically bonds to the outer, epithelial layer of the skin. Bio-Safe® Skin Shield™ polymer coating deters direct contact between one's skin and the latex in the glove making it an excellent form of secondary protection when gloves are required. Clinical tests have shown Bio-Safe® Skin Shield™ lotion to be orally non-toxic, non irritating, and non sensitizing.
A study was conducted in two 34-bed medical units at a Canadian community acute care hospital. The purpose was to evaluate whether the regular use of Bio-Safe® Skin Shield™ lotion resulted in reduction in nosocomial MRSA transmission. Those patients hospitalized in the "control" unit were 9.3 times more likely to develop nosocomial MRSA. The results of this study suggest that Bio-Safe® Skin Shield™ lotion "may have a significant impact on nosocomial MRSA."
